IMPHAL: Prices of essentials have shot up in the state with the ethnic violence affecting movement of goods from outside Manipur.
“Earlier, a 50kg bag of superfine rice used to come for Rs 900, now costs Rs 1,800. Prices of potatoes and onions have increased by Rs 20 to Rs 30,” said Manglembi Chanam, a government school teacher in Imphal West. She said LPG cylinders are being sold in black market for Rs 1,800, while a litre of petrol costs Rs 170 in many parts of Imphal West. “Prices of eggs have risen as well, with a 30-egg crate now costing Rs 300 instead of the usual Rs 180,” she added.
Prices have gone up also in districts not badly hit by violence. Rebecca Gangmei, 41, who runs a grocery shop in Tamenglong, said, “Only prices of meat, which is sourced locally, haven’t seen much change.”
