Railways: Road, Railways Show Highest Ever Capex Of 5.2l Crore | India Business News

New Delhi: Road and railway ministries achieved highest ever capital expenditure of Rs 5.2 lakh crore during 2023-24, despite limitation due to Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for Lok Sabha election. Road and railway sectors had 50% of the Rs 10 lakh crore capex allocation for 2023-24.
The road transport and highways ministry spent Rs 2.6 lakh crore, which is 99.9% of revised estimate and 29% more than the previous financial year.Out of four highway building agencies, NHAI spent around Rs 2.1 lakh crore in last year.
The higher expenditure in the highway sector also resulted in construction of 12,336 km or almost 34 km a day — the second highest rate of NH construction in the country’s history. The highest so far has been 13,327km in 2020-21, when daily construction touched 36.5 km.
In case of railways, the overall capital expenditure was approximately Rs 2.6 lakh crore, an increase of 26.5% over 2022-23. The increase in expenditure resulted in acceleration of rail electrification, laying of new lines and tracks. Electrification of railway lines touched 7,188 km. It also achieved 5,300 km of laying new lines, doubling and gauge conversion.
